Whenever someone asks for New Gods or Fourth World comics recommendations, a few stories always come up. One of those is Cosmic Odyssey.
Well, good news for you Fourth World fans. DC Comics is set to release Cosmic Odyssey: The Deluxe Edition hardcover soon. The story has been collected in paperback format previously, but this will be the first time it gets the deluxe hardcover treatment.
The graphic novel is set to be available on February 25, 2017. The official solicitation, from DC Comics:
Collected for the first time in a Deluxe Edition, COSMIC ODYSSEY assembles an eclectic group of heroes to race against time to stop a cosmic entity hell-bent on destroying the galaxy. Do they have what it takes? Or will one hero bring destruction to an entire world? Collects the original four-issue miniseries, featuring Superman, Batman, Orion of the New Gods, Darkseid and many more!
The original Cosmic Odyssey mini-series was released as a monthly comic from December 1988 to March 1989. There were 4 issues of the comic released, each in a 48 page prestige format. The book was written by Jim Starlin, with pencils by Mike Mignola and letters by John Workman.
Outside of Jack Kirby’s original Fourth World work, this is one of the most popular New Gods stories. It features many of the New Gods working with Justice League characters like Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and Martian Manhunter. Orion, Lightray, Darkseid and other Fourth World concepts feature prominently.
Cosmic Odyssey is a universe spanning cosmic event. It features many fun, but intense, team-ups of some characters who haven’t spent much time together. While some core Justice League characters are at the center of the book, the New Gods feature prominently.
The four books that make up Cosmic Odyssey each come with a different title that give a hint to what the story is about.
- Book One: Discovery
- Book Two: Disaster
- Book Three: Decisions
- Book Four: Death
Many collectors cite this story as one of the best New Gods stories not written by Jack Kirby. It is right up there with Legion of Super-Heroes: The Great Darkness Saga and Grant Morrison’s Rock of Ages and other work as most recommended New Gods reading.
Frankly, there aren’t enough DC events that focus on these important characters. It’s especially frustrating because the scope of Kirby’s original stories have so much potential for massive events, in terms of story, characters, blockbuster action and intriguing concepts.
As a fan of the Fourth World, it is great to see such an important event feature these characters in any capacity. It also helps that this is a good comic to read, even if you aren’t a New Gods fan.
I have read Cosmic Odyssey previously and I think it is definitely worth checking out. It is one of DC Comics best events of the 1980s. I will have a full review of the deluxe edition when it is released. You can pre-order your copy here.
