Darkseid scores another win for the Anti-Life in New Gods #17.
Where to read New Gods #17:
- New Gods digital comics on Kindle and Comixology
Previously – (Return of the) New Gods #16
Orion and Jezebelle are still at Happyland. Orion is angered that he left General Maxwell Torch unattended and was tricked by Darkseid. Jezebelle has to calm him down and convince him he needs to leave to protect the General.
This was a rather bizarre opening. Normally, Orion is quick to act and ready for the challenges of war. Seeming him stand there dumbfounded was just strange. It just didn’t seem like Orion. Perhaps, it’s planned as part of his story arc, but at this point I’m not sure what the plan is.
As Orion tries to leave, he is attacked by the Animate of Doctor Bedlam. He is shot down by a double blast of energy rays. Jezebelle is also knocked out.
Darkseid and Dessad are using the mind-probe to try to get information out of General Torch. Desaad convinces Darkseid to let him also probe the minds of Orion and Jezebelle. Desaad, of course, is eventually hoping to use any information he finds against Darkseid.
We also get a quick update of Highfather and Lucifar on New Genesis. Highfather is introducing Lucifar to the ways of their people. Lucifar says that New Genesis seems “weak”. Could this be a sign that he has darker intentions or does he just have much to learn?
Forager is awoken by Mother Box and alerted that Orion is in trouble. He is able to get to Happyland and sees Orion and Jezebelle tied up, with their memories being probed remotely by Dessad. Forager is able to defeat the Animate and free the duo.
Desaad had already gotten the information he needed, though. This allowed for flashbacks to the character’s origins. We see a new look at “The Pact” from issue #7, including views of Darkseid, Tigra, Highfather, and Orion. We also see that Jezebelle was raised and trained on Apokolips, similar to Big Barda.
Desaad also works to get information from General Torch, although he works to resist it. I was surprised Darkseid spent so much time on the General, as it was revealed in previous issues that he need not be alive to probe his mind for information.
The issue ends with the revelation that The Source no longer works. The cause is unknown, but it appears it could have something to do with Darkseid’s new information on the Anti-Life Equation.
Darkseid’s search for the Anti-Life Equation has dragged a little in the past, but it appears to be picking up steam. I’m assuming we will have some kind of a resolution soon. Although, this series doesn’t have much time left, so perhaps it was never resolved.
The farther we get away from Jack Kirby’s issues, the more these characters seem to change. Orion at times seems like a completely different character. What was once a complex character is now a single-minded war machine. As Orion was my favorite character in the original run, this is not good to say the least.
We have two more issues of this New Gods series remaining, but that’s not all. After the series was cancelled, there was a two issue wrap-up in Adventure Comics that finished this story.
